Mendelssohn’s Lobgesang (Hymn of Praise), a monumental piece for orchestra and choir, isn’t performed very often in the Czech Republic. The concept of symphony with choir and solos was for the first time realized by Ludwig van Beethoven in his Ninth Symphony. Felix Mendelssohn (1809–1847) wrote the “Hymn of Praise” on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the invention of letterpress in 1840. The premiere achieved an exceptional success. The theme and the choice of text (Holy script) should not surprize us: except of his famous orchestral pieces (The Italian and the Scottish Symphonies, A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Mendelssohn was also an author of supreme sacred music, e.g. Oratorios Paulus and Elijah.
