Edmonton Opera presented an evening of music in two halves: a first half titled “Journey” with selections by Golijov and Puccini, followed by a second half devoted to Golijov’s song cycle Ayre. Staged elements—especially focused lighting and costume choices—were integrated within the intimate 400-seat Triffo Theatre. A ten-piece ensemble blended acoustic instruments with electronics to underscore themes of cultural mixing and displacement. The sonic palette featured distinctive colors, including hyper-accordion and conch-like effects, that bridged folk materials and contemporary classical textures. As part of the company’s 60th-anniversary season, the production aimed for an immersive, eclectic experience distinct from grand-opera scale.
