The San Francisco Ballet's production of La Sylphide brings to life the signature Romantic-era charm of August Bournonville's 1836 masterpiece. Directed by Helgi Tomasson and staged by Ulrik Birkkjaer, the production emphasizes the ethereal beauty and mystery inherent in the classic Scottish tale. The staging explores timeless themes of forbidden love, the conflict between nature and civilization, and the human longing for meaning. Visually, the production relies on traditional Romantic aesthetics, featuring misty woodland settings and a tutu-clad corps de ballet. The scenic and costume designs by Jose Varona, originally constructed by the Dallas Ballet Costume Department with additional pieces by the San Francisco Ballet Costume Shop, are illuminated by Sara Linnie Slocum's lighting design to create the hauntingly beautiful atmosphere that defines the ballet.
