Dancing in the Dark is the world‑premiere musical adaptation of the 1953 MGM film The Band Wagon. Douglas Carter Beane provides a new book that integrates the classic Arthur Schwartz–Howard Dietz song catalog with a fuller, more cohesive story. The Old Globe production is directed by Gary Griffin and choreographed by Warren Carlyle, with set design by John Lee Beatty, costumes by David Woolard, lighting by Ken Billington, and sound by Brian Ronan. Music arrangements and supervision are by Eric Stern, with orchestrations by Larry Hochman and music direction by Don York. The show affectionately surveys the evolution of the American musical—from 1920s revues to contemporary spectacle—approaching the form with warmth and reverence rather than irony. It premiered on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in San Diego in March 2008.
