Directed by Cynthia Stokes, this world premiere staging of Nicolas Reveles’s chamber opera Sextet was created for Diversionary Theatre’s intimate venue during its 25th Anniversary Season. Robin Sanford Roberts and David J. Medina devised a flexible, inventive environment: a single white backdrop wall blending textures, patterns, and props to support rapid shifts among the six vignettes. Corey Johnston’s costumes largely kept to neutral browns and beiges, with a striking burst of color in the final scene, where David McBean appeared in a flamboyant kaftan. Choreographic elements by Peter G. Kalivas were interwoven with the action. The music was performed by a compact trio—cello, violin/viola, and piano—with composer Nicolas Reveles serving as both pianist and conductor. Reveles described the score as “American eclectic,” drawing on Copland, Rorem, Britten, church music, and jazz influences.
