A Tribute to ManolIs Kalomiris

The Greek National Opera’s tribute to Manolis Kalomiris, held on 28 June 2024 in the Stavros Niarchos Hall, has a dual aim: to illuminate the great Greek composer’s deep ties to melodrama and to the Greek National Opera, and to bring to light two completely unknown works. Manolis Kalomiris (1883–1962), born in Izmir, is regarded as the founder of the Greek National Music School. Drawing on Greek tradition, song, and the poetry and literature of his era, he composed over two hundred works, including five operas and three symphonies. His operas have long been a mainstay of the Greek National Opera’s repertoire. The concert includes the world premieres of To the Freedom of Crete and The Marble King.
