Dark Fall is an opera in 13 scenes exploring memory, identity, and the impact of Alzheimer’s. MiR’s staging centers on Ellen and her family, asking what remains when memories fade and how autonomy can be respected for a person with dementia. The production is directed by Jari Kunter with musical direction by John Warner; design by Vincent Krafft, lighting by Marius Steinert, sound by Jorg Debbert, and dramaturgy by Theresa Steinacker. Thomalla’s musical language is described as moving melodic lines repeatedly roughened by dissonances that probe the protagonists’ inner lives.
