Bernstein wrote his major trade show in 1971, commissioned by Jacqueline K. Onassis for the opening of the JF Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC; "A living memorial to JFK" , and had its world premiere on September 8. MASS is large-scale; with large choir, "street chorus", main role (celebrant), a number of soloists, children's choir, and stage orchestra (rock band) and orchestra. It is built around the fixed links of the Roman Catholic liturgy; Kyrie - Gloria –Credo - Sanctus / Benedictus - Agnus Dei. Bernstein has added "tropics" to the various links; Classical rhetoric calls for ways of saying things that break with common expressions. In MASS, they stand as comments, questions and challenges to the handed down and almost taken for granted at the fair, with the tendency that these are often recited without reflection.
