Cantatas is a 2012 contemporary dance work conceived, directed, choreographed, and set by Raimund Hoghe. Built around the universe of Johann Sebastian Bach’s cantatas and interwoven with secular, Spanish, and popular songs, the piece translates music into gesture and a ritual-like arrangement of bodies and voice. The nine performers create a space where Kerstin Pohle’s soprano voice dialogues with movement, rhythm, and spatial composition. Rather than a concert format, the work is staged as dance, focusing on presence, breath, and corporeal detail, including bodies that challenge normative expectations. The Lisbon presentations took place in 2013 at Teatro São Luiz as part of Festival Materiais Diversos.
