Encuentros

About

Encuentros was a cross-cultural concert presented by Soundstreams as the finale of its 2014/2015 season, co-produced with The Royal Conservatory of Music as part of the 21C Music Festival. An international lineup of soloists on guitar, bandoneon, piano, voice, percussion, and double bass explored diverse Latin traditions and their influence on other genres. Two Soundstreams commissions received world premieres: Andrew Staniland’s Choro: The Joyful Lament for Villa-Lobos and Mark Duggan’s Choro Sem Lua. The program also featured arrangements of Spanish repertoire by Serouj Kradjian and Grisha Goryachev, Afro-Sambas by Baden Powell/Vinicius de Moraes arranged by Paulo Bellinati, and works by Astor Piazzolla and Paco de Lucía. A pre-concert talk was led by Artistic Director Lawrence Cherney with Andrew Staniland.
