Tristan and Isolde is a pas de deux created in 2017 by leading contemporary choreographer Saburo Teshigawara, here on stage with his long-time collaborator Rihoko Sato. His dance, as essential and hieratic as Kabuki, meets the sublime, metaphysical music of Wagner’s most famous opera in a choreography that retraces the lovers’ inescapable tragedy, where love transcends death and finds peace only in eternal rest. For thirty years Teshigawara has been invited to perform in major theatres worldwide. In 2022 he received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement from La Biennale di Venezia: “brave, extraordinary, sensitive and electrifying, he has inspired, challenged and galvanized many generations of artists. His finely honed sculptural sensibility, his powerful sense of choreographic form and his highly personal language combine to create a world entirely his own.”
