The program celebrated music iconoclasts by linking Canadian voices—Claude Vivier’s Orion and Paul Frehner’s newly commissioned Phantom Suns—with Igor Stravinsky’s trailblazing The Rite of Spring. Vivier’s work, with its melodic motifs, distortions, and agile percussion, set an abstract, luminous tone. Frehner’s Phantom Suns explored shifting soundscapes and atmosphere, spotlighting marimba in its central movement. The evening culminated in The Rite of Spring in Jonathan McPhee’s reduced-orchestra arrangement, marking the centenary of the 1913 premiere and highlighting the score’s rhythmic ingenuity and orchestral color.
