Presented during the inaugural Bard SummerScape, this acclaimed staging of Alexander Ostrovsky’s 1859 play The Storm comes to the United States with the Moscow New Generation Theatre, directed by Henrietta Yanovskaya. The work that inspired Janáček’s opera Kát’a Kabanová is performed in Russian with English supertitles. With set and costume design by Sergei Barkhin and lighting by Tatiana Bronnikova, the production—praised across Europe and Russia—offers an intimate, ensemble-driven look at the tragic collision between individual freedom and oppressive social convention.
