This production is part of the Concertgebouworkest’s ambitious Bruckner Cycle, celebrating the 200th anniversary of Anton Bruckner’s birth. For this installment, the orchestra engaged Australian conductor Simone Young, a noted Bruckner expert, to lead the Symphony No. 6. Young, who previously served as artistic director of the Hamburg State Opera, made her debut with the Concertgebouworkest with these performances. The interpretation highlights the unique character of the Sixth Symphony, which Bruckner himself described as “die keckste” (the sauciest). Unlike the monumental architecture of his other symphonies, the Sixth is often noted for its transparency and rhythmic intricacy. The performance is presented without an intermission, emphasizing the cohesive arc of the four movements.
