Opera Bergen presents this infinitely beautiful vocal symphonic work in a stage version in the Nykirken, with delicate lighting. Dvořák created the work in 1877, in a shadow of grief, when the composer had lost three of his children to illness or accident, and he paints with a broad, sonorous brush. The text is an old Catholic sequence from the 14th century, and is an interpretation of Mary's 7 Sorrows. The music and its visualization actualize, problematize and sensitize central existential issues that are essential for modern people - whether they feel at home in a Christian culture or not
