Missa Solemnis

In 2010, the Grammy-winning American maestro John Nelson and expert on sacred music and Beethoven conducted the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and Gulbenkian Choir in the Grand Auditorium for a recording of Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis that gained global attention. Apropos of this, Michael Tanner wrote in the BBC Music Magazine that Nelson “succeeds in conveying the urgency of his view”. It ended by declaring that it seemed “unlikely that Beethoven’s vision in this work will ever be more completely captured”. The maestro will return to Gulbenkian Música to unite the Gulbenkian Choir and Orchestra for a performance of this Missa, of which he has an intimate and deep understanding.
