Director Luca De Fusco envisions this staging of La Tempesta as a profound farewell. Echoing Shakespeare’s own farewell to the stage and the breaking of his magical staff, De Fusco reframes it for today: a farewell to the 20th century as it yields to the new millennium. The protagonist (played by Eros Pagni) is imagined as an intellectual magician confined to his study; the island is a mental projection shaped by hallucinations and video mapping. All characters, including Ariel and Caliban, are facets of his mind, reimagined like a Jekyll-and-Hyde duality. Beyond the study lies a “millennial barbarism” that the 20th‑century intellectual cannot ultimately withstand. He can delay it, but must finally surrender. This vision mirrors contemporary anxieties and the pervasive disgust of our times, making identification with Prospero immediate and poignant.
