Cymbals, triangles and bass drums: they are truly a prime example of musical integration. Initially feared as instruments of the Ottoman Janissary bands during the Turkish siege, then becoming well-known and popular, they were already a regular subject in opera houses and concert halls during the Viennese Classical period. This also applies to the battle sounds of the "Synfonia turchesca" by Franz Xaver Süßmayr, the Mozart student who is now known only as the completer of Mozart's Requiem. The Turkish instruments also spread their charm in Haydn's stirring "Military Symphony". While the trumpet calls into action in the slow movement, it also shows its most cantabile side in his only, but extremely popular, trumpet concerto: the then new keyed trumpet of the virtuoso Anton Weidinger, capable of chromatic turns, made this possible. The young Austrian Selina Ott, the first woman to win the ARD Music Competition in the trumpet category in 2018, shines as a soloist.
