This chamber staging of Żeleński’s Janek at Teatr Wielki’s Młynarski Hall was realized with striking economy of means, featuring minimalist scenic design by Joanna Plakiewicz. Director Jitka Stokalska, best known for her comic opera work, approached the piece with a conceptual lens akin to ancient Greek tragedy, bringing a sober clarity to the unfolding drama. The concept was carried out in a cohesive, logical manner that deepened the emotional and narrative resonance of the opera. The production also integrated academic forces, notably the Chorus of the Vocal Department of the Academy of Music, which contributed youthful energy and freshness to the overall sound. The result was a focused, thoughtful revival that highlighted the opera’s dramatic core within a modest, chamber framework.
