Melting Pot

About

Melting Pot is a European cooperation initiative that convenes young improvisers to form new ensembles with minimal rehearsal. In 2023 it was jointly realized by Berliner Festspiele / Jazzfest Berlin, Jazztopad Festival (Wrocław), Handelsbeurs (Ghent), Nasjonal Jazzscene Victoria (Oslo), and the International Jazz Festival Saalfelden. Each partner invited a musician from its region, creating a quintet spanning Norway, Austria, Germany, Belgium, and Poland. The artistic focus lies on spontaneous sonic fabrics that emerge when distinct musical voices meet and build common ground in real time. The Berlin edition featured violin, clarinet, saxophone, electric bass, and drums, enabling textures from acoustic intimacy to amplified intensity. Rather than aiming for a shared idiom, the project invites stylistic difference to catalyze something new.
