This Salon 21 event was a participatory workshop celebrating Steve Reich’s 80th birthday, where percussionists Dan Morphy and Jamie Drake taught audience members to perform Reich’s Clapping Music (1972). The goal was to gather 80 participants in honor of the milestone. No prior musical experience was required beyond curiosity and the ability to clap. The evening included a Gallery Prelude at the Gardiner Museum, linking hands-on clay work with the creative process of rhythm and music. The workshop formed part of Soundstreams’ broader Steve Reich at 80 celebrations in Toronto.
