The “HOMMAGE À BERNSTEIN” concert was conceived as a tribute to Leonard Bernstein, one of the most influential advocates of classical music in the late 20th century. The program formed an American-leaning arc that highlighted Bernstein’s dual legacy as composer and conductor. It opened with the jazz-inflected Three Dances from his ballet Fancy Free, continued with Christopher Rouse’s Trombone Concerto—commissioned for the New York Philharmonic’s 150th anniversary and dedicated to Bernstein—and concluded with Arnold Schönberg’s 1937 orchestration of Brahms’s Piano Quartet in G minor, Op. 25. Conducted by Daniel Raiskin and featuring ERSO’s principal trombonist Andres Kontus, the concert was the fourth installment of ERSO’s 2012/2013 “MEISTRIKLASS” series and was broadcast live on Klassikaraadio.
