Junge Bühne Mainz presents Erich Kästner’s landmark 1949 children’s novel in a new stage adaptation for young audiences and theatre lovers. Directed and adapted by Philip Barth, the production broadens Kästner’s call for peace with contemporary dimensions such as environmental and climate protection, and updates certain character dynamics for today’s society. At the same time, it preserves the deliberately utopian, fairy-tale idea of the world being saved by animals from all continents. The staging engages with themes of peace politics, wars, the climate crisis and climate action, the planet’s future, and the parent–child relationship.
