The composer Giovanni Pacini was not only a personal friend of Rossini, but perhaps the most gifted of his collaborators. In recent years we have had several opportunities to admire his excellent contributions in Rossini's operas (Adina, Matilde di Shabran). Now, for the first time in modern times, we are performing one of Pacini's major works, which was composed for La Scala in Milan in 1828 and was a great success not only there. The legendary Giovanni David created the role of the Arab leader Agobar, who is in fact the son of the last Merovingian king and who repentantly confesses this at the end. Therefore a "triumph of faith" - as the subtitle goes. This monumental opera requires an enormous amount of soloists, chorus and orchestra and can therefore only be performed once.
