RITUALS is a curated morning concert at the 79th Ojai Music Festival led by Claire Chase that bridges medieval and contemporary sound worlds. It opens with JACK Quartet’s Modern Medieval project, reimagining historical materials through new works by Christopher Otto and Austin Wulliman. The program then turns to premieres by Susie Ibarra, including the world premiere of Nest Box—commissioned to honor Steven Schick’s 70th birthday—and concludes with the West Coast premiere of Sky Islands. The performance combines Western chamber forces with sheng and newly crafted gong-metal sound sculptures, weaving rhythmic and melodic ideas inspired by Philippine Northern-style bamboo, gong, and flute traditions into the outdoor acoustics of the Libbey Bowl.
