This production is a reconstruction of Filippo Taglioni’s seminal 1832 work, considered the quintessential Romantic ballet. The original marked a breakthrough for pointe technique and established the image of the ethereal ballerina in white, still emblematic of classical dance today. In 1972 Pierre Lacotte staged his reconstruction for the Paris Opera, meticulously researching historical sources to preserve the Romantic style. Unlike the widely performed Bournonville version, Lacotte’s staging reflects the French school and uses the original Schneitzhoeffer score. For the Bayerisches Staatsballett, historic sets by Pierre Ciceri and costumes by Eugène Lami have been newly realized in the workshops of the Bavarian State Opera under Andrea Hajek, achieving a historically informed visual world. The company added this production to its repertoire in November 2024.
