The 1991 staging of Mazeppa at the Bregenzer Festspiele was presented indoors in the Great Hall (Großer Saal) of the Festspielhaus Bregenz. Directed by Richard Jones and conducted by Pinchas Steinberg, it was a co-production with the Nederlandse Opera Amsterdam. The visual world was created by Brothers Guay (sets) and Nicki Gillibrand (costumes), with lighting by Wolfgang Göbbel and choreography by Lloyd Newson. The Wiener Symphoniker performed in the pit, while choral forces combined the Chor der Volksoper Wien, the Kammerchor Sofia, and the Bregenzer Festspielchor. Sung in Russian, the production marked the Austrian premiere of Tchaikovsky’s opera and ran for five performances between 28 July and 11 August 1991.
