American Apollo is a contemporary opera that imagines the complex relationship between the celebrated American portrait artist John Singer Sargent and his Black muse and model, Thomas Eugene McKeller, a hotel worker. The production confronts the historical erasure of McKeller, whose body shaped some of Sargent’s most iconic works while his name and identity were largely omitted from history. Directed by Nataki Garrett and with musical direction by Kedrick Armstrong, the staging brings a hidden history to the forefront. What begins as a straightforward artistic opportunity evolves into an intimate exploration of race, class, power, and sexuality. It ultimately becomes a love story that questions who is immortalized in art, who is left unnamed, and what it means to claim one’s story.
