A site-specific adaptation by the French quartet Novembre, Apparitions was commissioned for the 60th Jazzfest Berlin and created with the ensemble Bribes and two Berlin children’s choirs. Thirty children aged nine to twelve were integrated into an advanced jazz framework, emphasizing intergenerational collaboration. The performance used the Haus der Berliner Festspiele’s balconies and foyer to build an immersive sound field. Musicians and singers appeared in shifting constellations, enhanced by stark lighting that made figures materialize like specters. The concept fused Novembre’s precise writing with improvisation and the playful energy of the young singers. The result was an acoustically mobile concert piece that blurred the line between stage and architecture.
