Proudly supported by the Talens Lyriques Patrons’ Circle. he lamento is a relatively classic form in the musical expression of opera. What we love to showcase in opera is love; and when love ends badly, that’s when the tears come, when suffering is shared, and the musical moments become ever more expressive. It began with Monteverdi, who was the first to write operas that were truly captivating and psychological. This trend then spreads across Europe, particularly in France, but also across the Channel to England, which brought us to find lamenti not only with Lambert, Lully, but also with Purcell. The lamento, this intimate heartache, is the place where misfortunes and fragile heartbreaks are told: this is why we need nothing more than a continuo to accompany this programme. » – Christophe Rousset
