HEDDA is José Maria Vieira Mendes’s contemporary rewrite of Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler, staged by Jorge Silva Melo. The São Luiz presentation frames the piece inside a bourgeois interior where secrets, frustrations, hidden loves, money, and envy circulate. The material treats Hedda as a kind of female Hamlet and connects her conflict to the shifting social position of women. Artistas Unidos stresses that the rewrite is not a superficial update, but a present-day reading of Ibsen’s ideas and of Hedda’s inner life. The staging retains iconic elements such as the two revolvers and the manuscript, along with figures like Eilert Lövborg and Thea Elvsted. Design is by Rita Lopes Alves (scenery and costumes) with lighting by Pedro Domingos. The language of performance is Portuguese.
