Christoph Hagel fuses Mozart’s opera with the youth culture of the 21st century. While the timeless beauty of the original remains untouched, hip-hop now shapes the action instead of Viennese popular theatre. Papageno raps, the protagonists dance to pumping beats, and orchestra, operatic singing, and hip-hop merge into a completely new classic. Even the original Magic Flute owed its success to the clash of opposites: Mozart and his librettist Schikaneder consciously addressed a young audience and relied on a fusion of popular and mystery theatre. In this sense, Zauberflöte Reloaded is a logical translation of the original model, but above all it feels strikingly fresh.
