After Au monde and Pinocchio , the western hemisphere's most prolific opera composer wanted to write a slightly lighter opera. He found inspiration in Georges Feydeau, French author of numerous vaudevilles; with the director Richard Brunel, he made substantial cuts in the play On purge bébé (1910) to reduce it to the dimensions of an opera libretto. Monsieur, Madame and their tyrannical yet constipated son, Toto, have a crazy day during which chamber pots fly through the air. Porcelain isn't the only thing to shatter in this burlesque nightmare, petty-bourgeois appearances also happen… Good shit!
