Sola Soletta

Sola soletta is a contemporary music-theatre creation conceived and directed by soprano Maribeth Diggle, with music by Ezequiel Menalled. The piece interrogates gendered hierarchies and authoritarian habits within the opera world, drawing on Diggle’s experiences to propose a model rooted in shared authorship and female leadership. Menalled’s score binds lyricism, contemporary vocal techniques, and live electronics into a sensuous, immersive sound design. Visual and spatial elements by set designer Eva Florizoone and costume designer Shaposhnikova shape a socially critical yet poetic stage environment. Rather than retelling Puccini, the work uses Mimì’s narrow narrative agency as a springboard to reimagine how women can appear and be heard on the opera stage.
