Sergei Banevich (b. 1941) is regarded as a classic of children’s music. Guided by his belief that classical music fosters a child’s inner spiritual world, he combines creative work with active outreach, including initiating international children’s music festivals in St Petersburg and introducing young audiences to musical theatre. He aims to write operas and operettas for children in a contemporary musical idiom, blending Prokofiev’s legacy with modern means. His works include the operas The Little Town in a Snuffbox, The Twelve Months, Ferdinand the Magnificent, How Night Was Switched On, and the ballets The Little Mermaid, Thumbelina, and Bambi. Murych the Cat (2017) is his fifth opera at the Mariinsky Theatre: a warm, playful tale about the resourceful, slightly boastful cat Murych celebrating his birthday with family and friends. It is designed for the youngest listeners yet resonates with parents as well.
