Nordkraft as an opera takes new paths to capture the captivating atmosphere and intense emotional life in Jakob Ejersbo's modern classic. The opera explores the existential cracks described by Ejersbo, focusing on the human abyss encountered by Maria, Allan, Steso, Hossein, and Tilde. The music is porous and highly sensitive to sound, processing and mirroring universal human experiences. Rather than traditional props, the scenography uses abstract, carefully choreographed images to delve into emotions instead of concrete settings, exploring the feeling of being unable to change direction—trapped on a path leading into darkness. The libretto remains faithful to Ejersbo's original text. Commissioned and produced by Copenhagen Opera Festival to foster new and viable contemporary operas, the project was developed with a growing pool of younger composers, directors, and scenographers working in opera. It had been in development since 2016 before its 2021 premiere.
