"Krabat" by Otfried Preussler is one of the most famous German books, widely awarded and translated into 37 languages. Based on a Sorbian legend and often called the "Sorbian Faust," it follows the orphan Krabat, whose mysterious dreams lead him to the mill at Koselbruch. There he becomes the one‑eyed master's apprentice and learns the miller's trade. Gradually he suspects that far more than grain is ground at this mill. Together with other journeymen, he is initiated into the art of black magic—and the more he learns, the greater the danger he faces. Krabat tells of loss and betrayal, seduction and the abuse of power, but also of friendship and love.
