This production marks the Swiss premiere of Ethel Smyth's one-act opera Der Wald, described by conductor Raphaël Merlin as a rare fresco of underestimated scope, in the vein of the great German Romantics. The event is conceived as a participatory concert, inviting amateur musicians and singers to perform alongside l’Orchestre de Chambre de Genève and the Le Motet choir. This collaborative format aims to create a one-of-a-kind participatory evening in Switzerland. The stage design is developed in collaboration with students from HEPIA (Geneva School of Engineering, Architecture and Landscape). The evening also highlights emerging talent: Celia Cano, second prize winner of the OCG award for brilliant graduates, conducts the overture to Smyth’s The Wreckers. Merlin also underlines Smyth’s stature as a major figure—composer-conductor and feminist activist—adding historical significance to the revival.
