Tracy Turnblad is a huge fan of The Corny Collins Show. In this, the "Nicest Kids in Town" are presented every week on local television, showing the latest dance steps. It's Tracy's biggest dream to perform there. But she is not one of those who fit into the show. She's too unconventional. When a dancer on the show drops out, she jumps at her chance. She does not want to accept that her black friends are fundamentally denied this. After all, she learned the dance steps from them. Marc Shaiman, who also wrote the film music for Sister Act and Sleepless in Seattle , uses the sound of the 60s for Hairspray, from Motown Blues to Funky Groove. Nobody stops the beat and I know where I've been showing that this musical offers more than just good entertainment. It's set in 1960's Baltimore. The core themes of the piece are no less relevant today, especially thanks to social media: LGBTQI+ rights, racism, feminism and body-shaming. This is how Hairspray becomes a powerful message of respect and tolerance.
