Francisca is a theatrical monologue that explores memory and cultural identity through the intimate presence of a single performer. Created and performed by Nicaraguan theatre-maker Lucero Millán, the piece was selected for the 3rd edition of the Muestra Escénica Iberoamericana (MEI) festival in Tenerife, Spain, and its 8 September 2021 presentation at Teatro El Sauzal marked the work’s European premiere. Staged by the Nicaraguan company Teatro Justo Rufino Garay, the production draws on traditional ritual and personal testimony to navigate the emotional landscape of a protagonist divided between two national identities. Millán’s writing and direction emphasize a close, direct relationship with the audience, using minimal resources to evoke a rich world of memory, absence, and belonging.
