Fabrice Melquiot’s new creation is a tender yet caustic homage to friendship, the passing of time, and to cinema before Netflix, Amazon, and streaming. I wrote Lazzi for Philippe Torreton and Vincent Garanger. Writing for them means writing from them—shaped by each of them and by the artistic friendship they share. The subject is deliberately fluid, ambiguous, and fragmented. The play does not tackle a single defined topic; instead, it gathers a jumble of ideas: these two men, a grand notion of friendship, an anecdote from a friend who worked at the last video store in Switzerland, a Godard quote, a house in the Morvan, and a handful of films. Its true subject is this small stack of images and sensations that, by colliding, end up generating a world. The play is published and represented by L’ARCHE – publisher & theatrical agency.
