Marie Schleef has discovered Shirley Jackson (1916–1965) for the stage. The American classic author and master of the uncanny, little known in Germany, has long been part of the literary canon in her home country. The short story, published in The New Yorker in 1948, was controversial at the time and is now considered one of the most famous short stories of the 20th century. Today, The Lottery once again appears as a text of the moment and is being staged for the first time in the German-speaking world. Marie Schleef’s artistic interest lies in the unknown and the forgotten; she primarily directs texts that have not yet been performed in the German-speaking world.
