"75 Miles" is a chamber opera commissioned by Washington National Opera as part of the American Opera Initiative program. It premiered at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on January 12, 2019. The opera is inspired by true events and tells the story of sixteen-year-old Avery, who discovers she is pregnant in rural Pennsylvania. The closest women's health clinic is seventy-five miles away, forcing her family to confront their faith, beliefs, and economic limitations in the face of an unexpected pregnancy. The score, by composer and bass Matt Boehler, is noted for its intensity in moments such as Avery's "I'll be okay" response to her mother, where tortured harmonies underscore the reality of her situation. The whispery orchestral coda effectively conveys the lingering questions and emotional toll.
