Surrogate Cities is one of the major projects of German composer and musical theater innovator Heiner Goebbels. It is a reflection on the modern city. An examination of the "concrete jungle" in all its complexity. Composed from historical-musical flashbacks, the literary quotations and the configuration of the text are an integral part of the work, incorporating authors such as Paul Auster, Hugo Hamilton and Heiner Müller. Orchestral and vocal music combined with electronics, it participates in a continuous dialogue with the Austro-German musical tradition, incorporating elements of jazz and blues.
