The First National Tour of Some Like It Hot brings the updated classic film to the stage in a high-energy, tap-centric production with expansive Broadway staging. Set during the Prohibition era, the show evokes a vibrant speakeasy atmosphere and showcases lavish costumes designed by San Diego–raised Gregg Barnes. Directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw, the staging affectionately nods to the madcap musical films of the 1930s, highlighted by dazzling tap numbers and an epic second-act chase sequence. The adaptation updates the source material with modern sensibilities, particularly in its handling of gender identity: Jerry discovers and embraces a non-binary identity as Daphne. The San Diego run resonated locally as the story’s destination, the Hotel del Coronado, is nearby and served as a filming location for the original movie.
