When Tom begins dating Helen, a confident plus-sized woman, the chemistry is instantaneous. But will the pressures of Tom’s social circle stand in the way of love? In the role of Helen, we finally see an operatic character written specifically for a fat performer as a romantic lead, telling of an experience that is all too common. Adapted from the award-winning 2004 play by iconic American playwright Neil LaBute, this black comedy, set in '90s Florida, reveals the operatic reserves of human truth that lie beneath the surface of a workplace rom-com. With music by Matt Boehler and a libretto by Miriam Gordon-Stewart, the chamber opera Fat Pig was commissioned by Victory Hall Opera and given its premiere in January 2022 in Charlottesville, VA.
