This is a production of Aalto Theater Essen presented by Oper Köln. Directed by Dietrich W. Hilsdorf, the staging premiered at Aalto Theater in 2020. It focuses on the existential core of the biblical origin story and presents the first conflict between brothers as a human drama rather than solely as a religious account. Its central themes are envy, guilt, and the desperate search for recognition. Rubén Dubrovsky's musical direction is described as precise and expressive. The design team consists of Dieter Richter for set, Nicola Reichert for costumes, and Andreas Grüter for lighting; scenic rehearsal is by Carolin Steffen-Maaß, with dramaturgy by Christian Schröder and Stephan Steinmetz.
