Black Lives Matter, police brutality, rigged elections... over the past year these themes have been an integral part of current affairs. In The Time of Our Singing, based on the book of the same name by Richard Powers, recent American history finds a special sounding board. The work tells the story of a racially mixed family that, against the background of post-war segregation in the US, is connected and driven apart by music. Together with librettist Peter van Kraaij , conductor Kwamé Ryan and director Ted Huffman , LOD composer Kris Defoort opens an imaginary place where great and small history meet, where people come together and tell a story, where jazz and classical music enrich each other. “As far as I know, it is not often that a contemporary opera is so strongly anchored in the now and yet also addresses so many universal themes.” (Kris Defort)
