Europa unfolds in a small European border town centered on an abandoned railway station where trains no longer stop. Factories have closed, work has disappeared, and the community sits at the edge of wider political and economic currents. Pedro Carraca’s Portuguese production of David Greig’s play emphasizes movement—literal and emotional—as characters try to find routes out of stasis and disconnection. The staging connects intimate stories with the aftermath of the Balkan wars, globalization, unemployment, and displacement. As fear and populism grow, the play becomes a warning about complacency and the risk of awakening to a future already foreclosed. The production uses Pedro Marques’s translation, with design by Rita Lopes Alves, lighting by Pedro Domingos, sound by André Pires, and video by Jorge Cruz.
