The world premiere production of First Murder (Le Premier Meurtre) at Opéra de Lille is a collaborative creation between composer Arthur Lavandier, librettist Federico Flamminio, director Ted Huffman, and the ensemble Le Balcon under the musical direction of Maxime Pascal. The staging uses a minimalist scenography that emphasizes the complex narrative structure, conceived as a story about narration. A hallmark of this production is Le Balcon’s immersive sound world: voices and instruments are amplified and projected via loudspeakers placed in the theater, creating an enveloping, acousmatic experience. An onstage ensemble, including prominent brass, interacts directly with the action. Two tenors serve as narrators, physically guiding characters and shaping the plot in real time.
